World of Outlaws Sprint Series celebrates achievements in 2005, looks
forward to 2006
Norman, OK — Oct. 27, 2005 — By Chris Dolack, VP of Public Relations
The 2005 World of Outlaws Sprint Series season concluded on the track
Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but it took a couple of
parties and a meeting with some of the most important promoters in the
country on Sunday and Monday to fully bring the season to a close.
Sunday afternoon, promoters listened attentively as many DIRT
MotorSports officials laid out plans in their respective departments
for the 2006 World of Outlaws season. From increased television
broadcasts to increased sponsorship, strategies were presented to help
show that DIRT is eager to push dirt track racing forward next season
and beyond.
To help achieve its goals, DIRT’s Chief Financial Officer, Brian
Carter, announced that World of Outlaws founder Ted Johnson and DIRT
founder Glenn Donnelly were appointed to serve on a newly created
advisory board. Carter noted that each had dedicated a significant part
of their lives to building dirt track racing in the United States and
that as an organization it wanted to hear their ideas about how to move
it forward in 2006 and beyond.
One of the first steps in moving into 2006 was the naming of five more
drivers who have signed to compete with the World of Outlaws Sprint
Series. Already committed to the series were 2005 top-10 championship
points-earning racers Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl, Daryn Pittman,
Donny Schatz and Brooke Tatnell. The next group to join them will
include Jeremy Campbell, Brian Carlson, 1995 top Outlaws rookie Randy
Hannagan, Justin Henderson and Jason Martin. It also was announced that
the remaining drivers who will compete for the 2006 World of Outlaws
Sprint Series championship will be named in the coming weeks.
Later Sunday night, a party showcased the exciting 2005 season with an
eye toward 2006. After sponsors were honored and several drivers
presented with their share of the points fund, several promoters also
were deservedly spotlighted with awards, including Knoxville Raceway’s
Ralph Capitani, Brownfield Promotions’ Fred Brownfield and the team
from SLS Promotions, represented by Steve Sinclair and Larry Hillerud.
Moving to Monday and the 2005 World of Outlaws banquet at the Palms
Resort & Casino, drivers and teams were presented with their share of
the points fund.
Steve Kinser was honored for winning his 20th World of Outlaws Sprint
Series championship following a season that included 20 A-feature
victories, six preliminary night wins, 48 top-fives and 61 top-10s.
Jason Meyers also received recognition as the runner-up to Kinser.
Meyers had the best points finish of his career with four A-feature
victories, 23 top-fives and 50 top-10s.
Shane Stewart received special mention as the winner of the 2005 Kevin
Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award. He joins a list that includes recent
winners such as Kraig Kinser, Jason Sides, Tim Shaffer and Donny Schatz
as well as some of the most prolific sprint car drivers of all time
such as Brad Doty, Mark Kinser and Andy Hillenburg.
Now with the 2005 season officially over, work already has begun on
helping promoters make 2006 even more competitive and exciting for the
fans. After all, the green flag on 2006 waves Feb. 9 at Volusia
Speedway Park, only a short off-season away.
